Inês Carmo Figueiredo, Mafalda Corvacho and Pedro Mota are psychiatrists and co-founders of SPACE - Sociedade Portuguesa de Aplicação Clínica de Enteógenos, and coordinators of the book "Psychedelics in Mental Health", in which they discuss the use of psychedelics in some illnesses. Scientific evidence has shown that the risk of a person becoming dependent on the substance used in treatment is very low. The medical assessment that is carried out before patients are offered this type of treatment also assesses aspects of their previous history or personality characteristics that may confer a higher potential risk of addiction. Ketamine is predominantly used, which has antidepressant and anxiolytic properties, with solid scientific evidence collected over the last few decades. Ketamine-Assisted Therapy has been available in Portugal since 2021.
