According to the National Health Service, burnout is a "state of physical and mental exhaustion caused by the exercise of a professional activity". It is characterized by three stages of evolution:
1) Emotional exhaustion: Perceived lack of energy for professional and personal activities. Work is seen as painful;
2) Depersonalization and/or dehumanization of contact: contact with others becomes impersonal and devoid of affection;
3) Low professional fulfillment: demotivation with work, which leads to a feeling of loss of meaning in tasks and lack of interest in work.

The main psychological symptoms of burnout are: Impatience and irritability, Difficulties concentrating and memorizing, General lack of energy, Altered appetite, Decreased libido, Sleep disturbances, Physical fatigue and body aches.

On the biological front, cortisol (stress hormone) levels increase, as do blood pressure and blood glucose (sugar levels).
