In Portugal, students with ADHD (Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder) may be eligible for special accommodations on tests, final exams, and national exams.
According to Decree-Law No. 54/2018, dated July 6, the law provides for a series of special provisions for students diagnosed with ADHD.
Specifically: more time on the test (up to 30 minutes), the proctor reading the instructions aloud, longer intervals between tests to reduce fatigue, administering tests and exams in a quieter room or one with fewer distractions, and the option to take short breaks during the test.
What signs should I look out for?
If your child has trouble paying attention to schoolwork or games, doesn’t seem to listen when spoken to directly, avoids or resists tasks that require greater mental effort, constantly fidgets with hands and feet, can’t sit still, gets up at inappropriate times (such as in the classroom or during meals), or has trouble playing calmly, it is important to seek an evaluation from a mental health specialist.
Seek a neuropsychological evaluation
A neuropsychological evaluation consists of a detailed assessment of cognitive, emotional, and behavioral functions, conducted by a neuropsychologist. It is intended for children, adolescents, and adults who experience difficulties associated with neurodevelopmental disorders, brain injuries, neurodegenerative diseases, or other conditions that affect brain function. It is recommended for cases of learning disabilities, ADHD, and cognitive changes caused by stress, aging, or neurological diseases.
